Photo-realistic cloud and water textures. This looks so good it’s just ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and pick up one of these graphics packages. It’s not something you want to miss, trust me.
Real Environment Extreme
Yes, it really is extreme and you need to go get it – now! REX features Hi-definition, ultra-realistic 3D clouds and realistic rendering of cirrus clouds as seen in the real world, sky color environments, including smoothing horizon transition & visibility smoothing for dawn, day, dusk & night textures, weather engine modes with integrated real-world winds and temperatures aloft, a random weather generator, stunningly real 3D water environments with tropical reef simulation (end user color controllable, including tropical with reef simulations, inland and ocean, wave turbulence/frequency, environment variants & coloring, airport environments enhancments (photo-real asphalt & concrete runway textures, new runway and ground bump-mapping, asphalt taxiways, concrete taxiways, realistic taxiway markings, airport signage, airport parking and general photorealistic airport ground scenery), multiple variations of sun, lens flare & lightning bolt algorithms – and the list goes on. This is something you do not wanna miss. REX4 Direct is their newest product.

Flight Environment X
Another high quality company, and usually always compared to REX. This company has a lot of loyal fans and many will argue that FEX is just as good as REX, and maybe even slightly better in terms of realism. Flight Environment X might be a little more down to earth / relaxed compared to REX in terms of colors and contrasts, but it’s hard to find any glaring differences. It’s all up to personal preference. Overall a very solid pick either way. Store and images here:
Active Sky Next
Even though REX has an integrated weather engine, many people prefer to use ActiveSky as the weather generator engine. Their newest product Active Sky Next has a lot of new and interesting features. The weather engine essentially controls the weather part of the simulation like cloud coverage and accumulation etc. Active Sky Next features low-level weather control techniques that fixes many of the issues in the past like cloud and overcast inaccuracies, new complete cloud position awareness, synchronized cloud-based ambient weather effects and an integrated accurate radar simulation, all kinds of wind effects like deadly microburst, updraft and downdraft, enhanced turbulence and wind-shear effects. Overall a great and realistic program.
FS Global Real Weather and Opus X
More competition ! This one is hard, they’re all good in their own way. FS Global Weather might come out the winner in terms of realism, it does seem to reproduce real world weather the most accurately, especially in smaller local areas. Opus generates beautiful clouds and it has a user friendly Live Camera control, configuration and docking interface for 2D and 3D cockpits, and external aircraft views.
